Removing a Tesla Wall Charger from one location and transferring it to another might be necessary if you are moving or if you want to replace it with a newer version. In this comprehensive guide, we will discuss the process of removing Tesla Wall Chargers and provide helpful tips and information from various sources.

Replacing a Gen 3 Wall Connector

Replacing an existing Gen 3 Wall Connector is a simple process that can be done without the need for an electrician[1]. Here are the steps to replace the Gen 3 Wall Connector:

  1. Turn off the circuit breaker.
  2. Remove the four screws holding the wall connector onto the wirebox.
  3. Pull the original connector off the wirebox.
  4. Place the new Gen 3 Wall Connector onto the existing bracket.
  5. Secure it in place with four screws.
  6. Turn on the circuit breaker.
  7. Connect to Wi-Fi and complete the setup.

Before starting the process, ensure that you have the correct replacement part and check the part number on the side label to confirm that it is a Gen 3 model[1].

Removing and Replacing the Faceplate of a Gen 3 Wall Connector

To remove and replace the faceplate of a Gen 3 Wall Connector, follow these steps[2]:

  1. Turn off power to the Wall Connector at the circuit breaker and wait for 5 minutes for it to completely de-energize.
  2. Use a 4 mm hex bit to remove the main unit from the wirebox.
  3. Use a T10 Torx bit to remove the 2 screws securing the faceplate to the main unit.
  4. Push the faceplate slightly downward to release it from the 2 sliding tabs at the top of the main unit.
  5. Position the new faceplate on top of the main unit.
  6. Align the two tabs at the top of the faceplate with the two tabs at the top of the main unit.
  7. Push the faceplate upward until the two tabs securely connect.
  8. Secure the faceplate to the main unit with two screws using a T10 Torx bit.
  9. Secure the main unit to the wirebox with four fasteners using a 4 mm hex bit.
  10. Turn on the power to the Wall Connector at the circuit breaker.

Remember not to service the Wall Connector while it is energized and always turn off the power at the upstream circuit breaker before servicing[2].

Removing a Home Wall Charger

If you are selling your house and want to remove a professionally installed Home Wall Charger, follow these steps[3]:

  2. Remove the charger cover.
  3. Disconnect the power wires.
  4. Remove the charger from the wall.
  5. Put wire nuts on the end of each wire.
  6. Cover the box in the wall with a plate.

Make sure to turn off the circuit breaker and disconnect the wires before removing the charger from the wall[3].

Removing and Replacing a Gen 3 Wall Connector

If you need to replace a Gen 3 Wall Connector, the process can be quite simple and doesn’t require the help of an electrician. First, turn off the circuit breaker to ensure safety.

Remove the four screws holding the wall connector onto the wirebox, pull the original connector off the wirebox, and place the new Gen 3 Wall Connector onto the existing bracket.

Secure the new connector in place with four screws, turn on the circuit breaker, connect to Wi-Fi, and finish the setup [1]. To ensure that the wall connector being replaced is a Gen 3 model, check the part number on the side label, which will be displayed as TPN: 1457768-##-# [1].

Replacing the Faceplate of a Gen 3 Wall Connector

To remove the faceplate of a Gen 3 Wall Connector, you will need a T10 Torx bit and a 4 mm hex bit. First, turn off power to the Wall Connector at the circuit breaker and wait for 5 minutes for it to completely de-energize.

The main unit is then removed from the wirebox using a 4 mm hex bit. Remove the faceplate by using a T10 Torx bit to remove the 2 screws securing it to the main unit and pushing the faceplate slightly downward to release it from the 2 sliding tabs at the top of the main unit [2].

To install the new faceplate, position it on top of the main unit so that the two screw pegs at the bottom of the faceplate touch the bottom edge of the main unit.

Align the two tabs at the top of the faceplate with the two tabs at the top of the main unit. Push the faceplate upward until the two tabs securely connect.

Verify that the faceplate is seated securely and sits slightly higher than the main unit at the top. Secure the faceplate to the main unit with two screws using a T10 Torx bit, and hand-tighten the screws.

Finally, secure the main unit to the wirebox with four fasteners using a 4 mm hex bit, and apply pressure to the faceplate to compress the internal seal.

Turn on power to the Wall Connector at the circuit breaker [2].

Removing a Home Wall Charger When Selling a House

To remove a Home Wall Charger that was professionally installed in the garage when selling a house, follow these steps:

turn off the power to the charger at the circuit breaker, remove the charger cover, disconnect the power wires, remove the charger from the wall, put wire nuts on the end of each wire, and cover the box in the wall with a plate [3].

Removing a Wall Charger from a Tesla Model 3

To remove the wall charger from a Tesla Model 3, press and hold the button on the handle until the light turns white or the Tesla logo turns blue. If the cord still does not come out easily, there may be a problem with the locking pin, and a service call may be necessary [4].

If the charger is stuck in the charge port, try the following steps to remove it:

  1. Make sure the vehicle is unlocked. The charger may not release if the car is locked.
  2. Press and hold the button on the charging handle again, making sure the light turns white or the Tesla logo turns blue.
  3. Gently wiggle the charging handle and attempt to remove it.
  4. If the charging handle remains stuck, you can try to manually release the charging cable. Consult your vehicle’s owner’s manual for specific instructions on how to do this. In the Model 3, for example, there is a manual release cable in the trunk area on the same side as the charge port [5]. Pulling this cable should release the charging cable from the charge port.

If none of these methods work, it is recommended that you contact Tesla support or schedule a service appointment to have the issue resolved by a professional.

Keep in mind that if you’re selling your house, you may choose to leave the Wall Connector installed as a selling point, especially if the new owner is likely to have an electric vehicle.

This could make your property more attractive to potential buyers, and you could potentially negotiate the cost of a new Wall Connector for your new home into the sale price.

If you decide to remove the Wall Connector, it’s crucial to follow the proper steps to ensure safety and avoid damaging the equipment. Always consult the manufacturer’s guidelines or consult a professional electrician if you’re unsure about any part of the process.
