When anyone invests the kind of money that it takes to own a Tesla, they are surely going to want to make it known that they are taking good care of it, and that they are going to check up on anything at all that could be wrong with it. This means that anyone who spots water gathering up underneath their Tesla will want to know what the problem is, and what they can do to try to fix it.

Tesla Model 3 water under car

The first thing to remember if you see water gathered under your Tesla is that you should not panic. There are a number of explanations for why this might have happened, and you should avoid jumping to any conclusions. You can assume that there is a problem and work backwards from there, but you should not immediately freak out and think that your vehicle is doomed. There are a lot of reasons why water may gather under a Tesla Model 3.

You first need to rule out environmental causes. Has it rained recently and has some of that rain simply gathered up under your car. You might think that you could never be fooled into believing this was a bigger problem than it really was, but you should be surprised by how many people think that something much larger is going on with their vehicle than what is truly happening. If you can rule this part out, then you can start to look at alternative reasons why this has happened.

Is it normal for Tesla to leak water?

In some cases, the answer is yes. It depends on where the water leak is coming from. Some people have noted that a water leak near the left front tire is not something to be overly concerned about as this could be simply a factor of the AC evaporator coil leaking a little bit. This is an element that tends to do so from time to time, and it is not necessarily something that is overly concerning. You might just have a natural drip off from something like that.

However, there are instances when it might be best to have someone take a look at your Tesla and see why it is dripping water from certain areas. That is valid, but you need to remember that dripping water is far less concerning than if it were dripping oil or some other fluid. It is all a matter of perspective, but most would agree that they would much rather their vehicle drip water than virtually any other fluid. The water drip is something that they know they can handle, but other fluids could be a sign of much bigger problems.

Why is my Tesla leaking water?

To know for sure, you will need to identify which part of the vehicle appears to be leaking fluid, and exactly how much it is leaking. Is it just the AC evaporator coil that was mentioned above? If so, that is not such an urgent issue. There are things that can be done to help fix that rather easily. If it is coming from some other part of your Tesla, then you might have a bigger concern that you need to have addressed. There are some people who have reported that their Tesla leaks battery fluid and that the fluid appears similar to water when they first see it. That is troubling because it could mean larger issues for the battery. That said, not everyone who has trouble with their Tesla leaking fluid is seeing an issue with the battery. It is something to keep in the back of your mind, but don’t let your imagination run away from you on something like this.

Tesla Model 3 water from under glove compartment

A water leak under the glove compartment may be a sign of a water leak in the AC cooling unit for the vehicle. This is a little more serious than some of the other potential options for why the vehicle may be leaking, but you should still treat it with caution. This is definitely an issue that you will want a certified technician to take a look at, and never attempt to do this work on your own. Teslas are very special vehicles with unique components to them. You don’t want to go meddling with one if you don’t fully know what you are doing. Unfortunately, there are a lot of people who attempt to do so, and they often make their problems worse in the long run. Don’t put yourself in that position. If you see a leak under the glove compartment, it is time to take this vehicle in to get looked at.

Tesla brake fluid leak

You certainly don’t want to be in a spot where you have a brake fluid leak, but it does happen. Sometimes what presents itself as a water leak may actually be a brake fluid leak. It is not always easy for the untrained eye to spot the difference between the two, but that difference is critical. If you are going to take care of your Tesla the way that it needs to be taken care of, then you need to get a handle on things like brake fluid leaks.

Final Thoughts

There are a lot of reasons why water may be present underneath your Tesla, and many of them are no big deal. People can get overly worried right from the start that something more serious has happened to their vehicle, but this is often not the case at all. You just need to approach this problem with a cool head and an understanding that the only way to solve the problem is to take it one step at a time.
